During the recording of the 1970 “Jesus Christ Superstar” concept album, Ian Gillan of Deep Purple (who played Jesus) was given total freedom in the studio. In the song “Gethsemane,” Gillan improvised an iconic G5 note, which inadvertently became one of the most coveted notes in musical theatre.
